Ella Barnwell earned a dominant win in the women’s event at Port Talbot Wheelers 10-mile time trial in dry and calm conditions on Sunday, with Dylan Sage securing his first time trial success in the men’s event.

Multiple British National Champion Barnwell, riding for Saint Piran, finished the course in just 21-15, more than three minutes ahead of the 24-49 recorded by runner-up Emma Davies (Port Talbot Wheelers), while her team-mate Holly Labunsky was third in 25-10 to secure more success for the promoting club.

In the men’s event, 15-year-old Sage outshone the field to set a new personal best on the course of 20-21, beating 14-year-old Evolution Racing Academy club-mate Oliver Tregear who was almost a minute back in 21-09, narrowly seeing off third-placed Ben Phillips (VMCC powered by Y BEIC) who was two seconds behind in 21-11 in what was a highly competitive field.

On his win, Sage said: “I’m pretty happy with the time I’ve done, I’ve ridden quite a lot on that course before so it’s familiar.

“The winter has gone well, I’ve raced on the road a bit and abroad. This year I’m now focusing on some big international races abroad as well as Youth Olympics selection which is a big target for me.”

In the road bike event, host club rider Darren Edwards was at the top of the field in 23-22, ahead of Chris Seddon who clocked 24-07 for Cardiff Ajax CC, with Simon Richardson (05/03) third in 25-49.

Elsewhere, Port Talbot capped a fine day by claiming the team prize as well as Neil Gregory winning fastest veteran on standard in +5:59.

This event, run on the R10/22A course, starts just south of Resolven and proceeds south west past Melincourt and Ynysarwed, through Clyne and down to the Aberdulais Interchange, with riders turning and retracing the outbound route.
