Chris Gibbard (Bynea CC) and Joy Payne (High Wycombe CC) were victorious at the Cardiff 100 Miles RCC 15-mile time trial near Abergavenny in Monmouthshire on Saturday afternoon.
Gibbard, 41, clocked 29-20 which was 25 seconds faster than he was predicted to do by national rankings system Spindata, giving him the win by 22 seconds over the man who Spindata predicted could win, Ben Jones (Port Talbot Wheelers).
Third spot went to Adrian Ford (Team Bottrill) who was another 1-45 further off the pace.
Payne’s time of 39-37 gave the 66-year-old victory by just 29 seconds from Bristol South CC’s Joanna Knight, who formed part of the winning team of three solo riders alongside Andrew Legge and Daniel Kempe who were tenth and eleventh overall respectively.
Conditions in the morning were less than ideal, so it was good fortune that the event began at 2pm with warm and sunny weather and a light northerly wind crossing the course. However, some competitors complained the wind seemed to vary in direction far more than the road did!
Gibbard’s time was just 20 seconds shy of breaking his own course record for the R15/5 by just 22 seconds.
