Bethan Ouseley

Reigning Welsh 10-mile champion Bethan Ouseley (Pembrokeshire Velo) took victory by just one second at the Bynea CC 10-mile event near Resolven, while Ben Jones (Port Talbot Wheelers) was quickest male rider.

46-year-old Ouseley held off senior rival Freya Evans (Cero Cycle Division) with her time of 24-41, with Evans clocking 24-42 and third spot going to Emma Davies (Port Talbot Wheelers) with 25-19.

And in the men’s category 36-year-old Ben Jones clocked 19-35 to win by 38 seconds from Kyle Blackmore (Virtual CC) whose time of 20-13 was just one second faster than Anthony Jones (VMCC powered by Y Beic) in third.

HUUB WattShop junior Joshua Jackson put in a good ride, his time of 20-36 being good enough to secure the junior prize as well as being fourth fastest overall, while John Webb (The Tridents) was best on a road bike with 25-51.

Top female junior was Freya Evans (Cero Cycle Division) with second overall in 24-42, while top female on a road bike was Natasha Barton (The Tridents) in 28-43, making it two road bike wins out of two for their team.

Port Talbot Wheelers won the team prize, with Ben Jones being joined by Graham Rogerson and Neil Gregory.

The event used the popular R10/22a course on the A465 road, starting up near Resolven and heading down to Aberdulais before turning for home.

This was Ben Jones’s first open time trial of the year, but he is already showing the sort of form that had him win five events last year and place second in the Welsh 50-Mile Championships.

It has been almost a year since he last rode this same course in the Virtual CC event last March, and his time in the Bynea CC event on Sunday was more than a minute quicker than last March.

Similarly, this was Ouseley’s first appearance of the year, but she will be hoping to repeat her good performance in the Welsh 25-Mile Championships next month.
