Dougie Watson and Lorna Breetzke secured the men’s and women’s Scottish 100-Mile Championship titles at the event staged by Dundee Thistle on Sunday morning.
Watson (GTR-Return to Life p/b Streamline) clocked 3-34-57 to take the win by just over four minutes from Robbie Mitchell (Auchencrow Thistle CC), with third being Silas Goldsworthy (Ryan’s Bike Surgery), just nine seconds further off the pace.
And Breetzke clocked a new women’s course record time of 4-10-54 to win the event by 1-50 from Vanelli-Project GO team-mate Alexandra Hayden, while third was 2021 title winner Patricia Baird (Ecosse Performance Cycling Coaching) with 4-32-34.
It was a dry and warm day on the WE100/01 course which took riders from Forfar to Brechin, with an easterly wind getting stronger as the day went on.
Numerous Scottish VTTA records were set on a day where several riders clocked personal best times, although these are yet to be confirmed.
“The cool misty start was a welcome change from the heat of last week, as I need a lot of water when it's like that,” said Watson.
“As the day progressed the mist soon burned off and the easterly wind stiffened, making the steady rise to the Brechin turn really tough.
“By lap four I had very little to give, which luckily for me was the same for Robbie and Silas. This meant we roughly held our positions on the final lap and I think the three of us rolled over the line running on fumes.
“It was a great event and special thanks to the marshals as they did a top job on the day and getting up that early and standing around for five hours is commendable!”
This victory for Dougie Watson comes after he was the winner of the Scottish District 10-mile Championships in April, and is the latest of several Scottish national titles he has secured over the years.
44-year-old Breetzke from Findochty was third in the Scottish District 10-Mile Championships staged by Glasgow Nightingale CC back in April.
Further down the result of the 100, David MacNeil (Team Andrew Allan Architecture) missed out on the podium by 4-19 with his time of 3-43-26, while Graham Smith (Vanelli-Project GO was fifth with 3-44-12.
