Lewis Wake led a one-two for Team Kirkley Cycles at the Northumberland and Durham CA 10-Mile Championship staged by Derwentside CC near Edmundbyers, while top female was Louise Burnie (Blaydon CC).
National ranking system Spindata correctly predicted the top three with Wake winning, his time of 22-13 being eight seconds ahead of team-mate Adam Smith, while third was GS Metro’s Philip Kennell with 23-09.
Blaydon CC’s Louise Burnie clocked 27-47, taking the win by 1-27 from Adele McAleer (Velo Culture) who dramatically had to run the last 200 metres with her bike on her shoulder after a puncture at the top of the last climb.
Third fastest female was Sarah Wann, the EMC Cycling rider who clocked 29-40 in her first ever time trial.
“I was really happy with the win today and it was great to see my team-mate Adam finishing very closely in second place,” said Lewis Wake. “It’s my first time on this course so I was really unsure what time to aim for, although I’m pleased that it was good enough to secure the top spot.
“This will be my eighth open win of the season and plans now are to focus towards the National 10 in the North East where I’m sure there will be plenty of strong riders for me to chase and hopefully try and compete with.
“Big thank you to Derwentside CC for putting this on and as always the timekeepers and marshals from the NDCA region.”
And Louise Burnie added: “I’m really pleased to win today and the benefits of a week riding in the Dolomites is starting to show. Conditions were sunny and still - very unusual for Derwent Reservoir.”
Burnie now moves on to the Allen Valley Velo 24.8-mile event next Sunday, and the Barnesbury CC 25 the following weekend.
The event used the M107 course near Consett in County Durham, a course which has beautiful views for those who want to take the time to stop and admire. But the riders had other things on their minds, especially since overnight rain meant damp patches on places and extra care was needed.
In other categories Philip Kennell was fastest veteran on age adjusted time as well as third overall, his adjusted time being 21-51.
Hugo Storey of Muckle CC was fastest male on a road bike (23:58) and in her first ever time trial, Sarah Wann of EMC Cycling was fastest female on a road bike (29:40).
