Team Kirkley Cycles’ Joanne Rea and Lewis Wake were celebrating victory at the GTR-Return to Life 10-mile time trial in Northumberland on Sunday morning, as many riders got to recce the course for the National-Mile Championships later in the year.
September’s title race will use the same M101 course near Bedlington, but many will be hoping for better conditions than this event as the predicted sunshine didn’t materialise and instead the event was run off on a cloudy and overcast morning with temperatures of around 12 degrees.
Lewis Wake’s time of 19-18 gave him the win by 28 seconds from Darlington CC’s Marcel Schubert, with the podium being completed by Marc Anderson (GTR-Return to Life) with 20-02.
And in the women’s category Rea clocked 22-34 to take the win by 1-07 from Muckle CC rival Lois Jarvis, with third quickest woman being Adele McAleer (Velo Culture) in 24-36.
With no junior female course record set for this course so far, Sophie Heighton of Ferryhill Wheelers gets her name on the honours board riding a 26:27.
All proceeds from the event are being donated to the Paisley-based Return to Life Charity, which supports those who suffer from chronic kidney disease, undergoing dialysis or who are pre/post kidney transplant.
“I’m really happy with today’s performance,” said Lewis Wake. “Working with a great coach has helped me to gradually build my form nicely. A massive thanks to GTR and the organisers for putting on this event today, and for such a worthy cause.”
This was Lewis Wake’s fifth victory of the season so far in open time trialling, and in seven events ridden he hasn’t finished outside the top two.
His most recent victory was in the Tyneside Vagabonds CC 47-mile mountain time trial a fortnight earlier, while he has also been victorious at the Vector Racing 25, Team Kirkley Cycles 10 and North Tyneside Riders CC 10.
Joanne Rea’s win here was her third solo open time trial win, although she was also victorious in the Blaydon CC two-up 19 alongside Lucy Glover in April.
Rea’s previous wins include the Tyneside Vagabonds CC 47-mile event and the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service 12-miler last month. She was beaten into second in the North Tyneside Riders 10 back in April by Jarvis, so this win will go some way towards making up for that loss.
