Euan Adam secured a maiden time trial win in the men’s event at the Sunderland Clarion 25-mile time trial in Northumberland on Sunday morning, with Adele McAleer earning success in the women’s event.

Riding for Durham City Velo, 23-year-old Adam finished in 53-58 for his first CTT win at his ninth attempt, spanning just over two years since his debut at Bramley Wheelers CC 10-mile time trial on April 10 2021.

Barnesbury CC’s Zach Haigh was almost a minute back in 54-55 to take the runners-up spot with John Bowman (Muckle Cycle Club) third in 55-14, seeing off GS Metro’s Philip Kennell by three seconds in 55-17.

This event, run on the M254 course, involves an out-and-back which starts north of Ponteland and heads through Belsay to Kirkwhelpington on the A696, with riders turning and continuing south back past Belsay to finish by Cold Coats Moor Farm.

“This was the first time I’ve competed on this course – I didn’t expect to win and thought I’d be around one minute slower, so well worth the early morning start,” said Adam.

“It’s a bit of a drag on the outward leg not helped at all by a slight cross-wind. I really enjoyed it so my thanks to the organisers and marshals.”

McAleer, of Velo Culture, was top female in 1:04-53 while team-mate Justine Norman came second in clocking 1:11.46 and third female went to Celia Mitchie of Alnwick Cycling Club in 1:13.11.

In overcast but dry conditions, Kenny McLellan of Reifen Racing won the road bike category in a time of 1:01.06, while Mitchie was fastest female on a road bike in 1:13-11.
