Lewis Wake (Team Kirkley Cycles) battled to victory by just 20 seconds in the North Tyneside Riders CC 10, while Lois Jarvis (Muckle Cycle Club) won the women’s event.
Wake won seven open time trial events last season and took his first open victory of 2023 in a time of 20 minutes and 24 seconds.
The M102D course will be used for the National 10-mile Time Trial Championships in early September and this was the first open event on the new course.
Starting on the A192 outside Cramlington competitors filtered onto the A189 towards before turning near Bedlington Academy and retracing the route before passing the start and finishing in the Nelson Park Industrial Estate.
The course proved not to be at fast as previously thought which could have been in part down to the cold and damp morning.
Wake finished second in the Barnesbury 21 last weekend but went one better on this occasion and finished 20 seconds ahead of Team Kirkley Cycles team-mate Adam Smith (20-48).
Completing the men’s podium positions was Alexander Milne (Muckle Cycle Club) who stopped the clock in 21-17.
Fastest veteran on scratch was John Routledge (GTR Return to Life) whose time of 21-45 was good enough for fifth position overall.
He was chased home by quickest junior Harris Hall (Velo Culture) who finished seventh overall in 22-08 while Mason Bulfin (Manilla Cycling) was fastest juvenile (25-24).
Muckle CC won the team prize with Milne leading the way while John Bowman and Darren Robson contributed to make a combined time of 1-05-30.
In the women’s event Jarvis recorded a winning time of 24 minutes and 26 seconds which was 25 seconds faster than Joanne Rea (Team Kirkley Cycles) in 24-51.
Louise Burnie (Blaydon CC) completed the podium positions in 26-13, while Justine Norman (Velo Culture) was the quickest woman veteran stopping the clock in 27-40.
Juvenile girl Freya Johnson (North Shields Polytechnic Club) finished in 29-17 on a road bike, while Melanie Hall (North Tyneside Riders CC) was also on a road bike clocking 28-05.
In the men’s road bike competition Simon Crisp (Gosforth RC) was the fastest in 23-19 ahead of Zach Haigh (Barnesbury CC) in second (23-28) while Philip Gilbanks of Muckle CC was third (24:27).
