Alex Franks (VC de Londres) and Maia Howell (Matlock CC) won the boys’ and girls’ events respectively at the Juniors’ RTTC National 10 Mile Championships.
Franks broke the 20-minute barrier to post a time of 19-52 in the boys’ event, while juvenile rider Howell was quickest girl stopping the clock in 23-10 – with both times open personal bests.
Starting outside Cramlington the M101 saw riders join the rolling A189 before heading out and back to the turn at North Seaton finishing just short of the start.
The championship event was organised by Sharon Dyson on behalf of the Northumberland and Durham Cycling Association (N&DCA) with volunteers coming from across the district.
Franks recorded an average speed of over 30.2 miles per hour on his way to setting a new open personal best time in the boys’ event.
It was a first national title for the VC de Londres rider who finished second in last season’s National Closed Circuit Championship.
Matthew Peace (Otley CC) finished just 14 seconds behind the boys’ winner with his time of 20-06 enough for second.
Completing the boys’ podium was Archie Fletcher (360cycling) a further 16 seconds behind in third.
Last week’s winner of the juniors’ National 25-mile Championships, Patrick Casey (Anexo Group Race Team) was a non-starter.
In the juvenile boys’ category Oskar Everett (Orwell Velo) finished quickest in 21-59, ahead of Roch Morgan (Derby Mercury RC) in second (22-14) and Douglas Tulett (Thanet RC) in third (23-06).
Juvenile rider Howell posted an open personal best time to win her first national title in the girls’ category.
The Matlock CC rider finished second in last year’s National Hill Climb Championship but went one better this time out.
