Howard Shaw earned his first win of the 2023 season with victory in the men’s event at the East Sussex Cycling Association 10-mile time trial on Saturday, with Sally Turner triumphing in the women’s event.
Riding for trainSharp, Shaw clocked 19-59 – just 47 seconds behind James Rix’s course record of 19-13 – while Cris Coxon (Brighton Mitre) was quickest road bike and second overall in 21-13.
Just two seconds back in third overall and second time trial bike went to Marek Siwicki, riding for Addiscombe CC, in 21-155, while Nathan Russell (trainSharp) and David Clark (Eastbourne Rovers CC) could not be separated for joint fourth overall in 21-56.
Shaw finally had his first success in his 13th event of the campaign, having recorded five runners-up finishes, starting with the East Sussex CA 10-mile time trial on the same course on March 26, as well as the Sussex CA 25-mile time trial on May 7, followed by second places at the Sussex CA VTTA Surrey/Sussex Championship 50-mile time trial, the 15-mile Sussex CA 15-mile time trial on July 23 and the Team TMC 10-mile time trial on August 6.
In the women’s event, HUUB WattShop rider Turner set an unbeaten 22-30 for victory, with a time of 25-17 helping Iona Mitchell (Hastings & St Leonards CC) to the runners-up spot, and Eastbourne Rovers CC rider Anita Turner finishing in 27-33 for the final spot on the podium.
Coxon, who has enjoyed a remarkable season, made it eight wins from eight events on his road bike in 2023, with Samuel Benge (trainSharp) and Darren Humphrey (Sussex Revolution) finishing second and third in 22-52 and 24-22 respectively.
This event, run on the G10/87 course, starts in East Hoathly and heads southbound, bearing southeast through Whitesmith on the A22 before turning eastbound at Golden Cross, then upon reaching the Horsebridge roundabout the riders return upon the same route to finish just north of the start line.
