In-form Simon McNamara (Sigma Sports-Cannondale) secured win number six for the season at the Bec CC 10-mile event near North Holmwood in Surrey on Saturday, while fastest female was Hilary Briggs (Serpentine RC).

McNamara, 48 and from Henfield, clocked 20-18 to take the win by 29 seconds from Kevin Tye (VeloRefined Rule 5).

Third fastest overall – and the winner of the road bike category – was trainSharp rider Danylo Riwnyj, who was only another 13 seconds behind with exactly 21 minutes.

The only female to finish from three entrants, 61-year-old Londoner Briggs clocked 25-31 to take the women’s prize.

While Riwnyj was fastest on a road bike, second fastest in that category was Paceline RT’s Adam Page with 22-11, while 1-12 behind was Mark Houlden (34 Nomads RT) with 23-23 for third.

The event was run on the popular G10/42 course in Surrey, beginning just south of North Holmwood on the A42 and heading down the Capel bypass to the turn at Clark’s Green roundabout and heading back up to finish just above the start point on Horsham Road.

“I felt pretty good going into yesterday’s TT off the back of a3crg’s Goodwood 10 on Wednesday night and their 25 last weekend,” said McNamara.

“In truth I struggled with the breezy conditions and never really settled into a good rhythm, it was more a case of keeping your head and digging out a performance of sorts.

“But I was happy to get the win and I guess everyone else must also have found it tough going.”

McNamara has several victories in the bag already this season. He first tasted victory in an open time trial back in March at the Sussex CA 25 before also winning the road bike category in round one of the Merlin Cycles Classic Series later that month.

He then won the Brighton Mitre CC hilly 25, VTTA Surrey/Sussex 10 and East Sussex CA 10 in April, but has been denied wins since then with two second places and a third.

However, having won this Bec CC 10 he is targeting a Bank Holiday weekend double with a ride in Monday’s Brighton Mitre CC 10 near Steyning.

Hilary Briggs’ victory at the Bec CC 10 on Saturday was her second open time trial victory of 2023 so far, with the other coming at the Charlotteville CC 25 in late April where she was just 22 seconds off a new personal best for the distance.

But she has two second-place finishes too this season, at the Eastern Counties CA 25 in April as well as the London Phoenix CC 9.2-mile event that same month.

The next ride in her calendar is expected to be the Didcot Phoenix CC 25 next month in Oxfordshire on the A420 between Cumnor and Faringdon.
