Christopher McNamara (Sigma Sports | Cannondale RT) took an emphatic victory in the Good Friday Crawley Wheelers CC sporting event over an altered 38.9-mile course, while Rebecca Goodwin (Windrush Triathlon Club) won the women’s event.

Roadworks on the original course meant a slightly shorter distance of 38.9 miles greeted competitors - which McNamara covered in a winning time of one hour, 26 minutes and nine seconds.

The GS/196 included a slight divert due to traffic lights which had been installed on the eve of the event.

The course saw competitors start near Handcross before completing a long undulating loop around the West Sussex countryside down to Steyning before the tough return leg.

Conditions were described as sunny and favourable, but crisp as a cold morning greeted competitors for the Good Friday event.

Veteran McNamara won 18 open time trial events last season over a range of distances and added his fourth victory of 2023 on this occasion.

Mattie Dodd (VC De Londres) finished second in 1-29-58, while the fight for third could not have been closer as Andy Critchlow (Paceline RT) finished in 1-31-34 which was a single second faster than Pat Wright (Paceline RT).

The women’s event was also a close finish with Goodwin covering the adjusted course in a time of 1-55-30 which was just six seconds faster than Kerry McGawley (Brighton Mitre CC).

Triathlete Goodwin was competing in her first open time trial since 2021 when she rode the 41.6-mile version of the course in 2-11-20.

Completing the women’s podium positions was Delyth Williams (Dulwich Paragon CC who stopped the clock in 1-57-56.

In the road bike event Barnabas Purbrook took another victory for Sigma Sports | Cannondale RT stopping the clock in a winning time of 1-38-15.

Alex Dobiecki (Crawley Wheelers) finished second in 1-41-14 while Richard Cartland (HuntBikeWheels.Com) was a further four minutes back (1-44-17).

The only woman riding a road bike was Alexandra Dinsdale (Crawley Wheelers) who stopped the clock in 2-09-41.
