Pre-race favourites Mathilde Pauls and Paul Burton were victorious at the 2023 Gil Jessop Memorial 14-mile sporting time trial organised by Kingston Wheelers in Surrey on Sunday.
Mathilde Pauls (Look Mum no Hands!) clocked 36-16 to win the women’s category by 2-36 from Kingston Wheelers’ Heather O’Mahoney, while her team-mate Elsa Cochard was third, another 37 seconds back. All three were riding road bikes too!
And Paul Burton (Paceline RT) clocked 30-22 to win the men’s event by 24 seconds from Oliver Hurdle (Stolen Goat RT), while Judah Rand (Kingston Wheelers) was third, 17 seconds back.
Burton was also the quickest veteran, while the fastest junior rider was Kingston Wheelers’ own Owain Williams in 38-34. Fastest male on a road bike was Danylo Riwnyj of trainSharp in 31-30, which was 37 seconds better than second-placed Dominic Jackson (Foran CCC).
Burton’s 2022 campaign began with a victory at the Redhill CC sporting 18-miler last February, and he started this season off with a victory on Hungry Hill near Ripley. He went on to secure four open time trial victories last season, and will be aiming to add more as 2023 progresses.
Last season Mathilde Pauls only rode a few time trials, but was third fastest female at the Eastern Counties CA 10 in March and fourth in the Berkhamsted CC hill-climb, while she also secured a ride at the National Championships on the Old Horseshoe Pass in October.
