Michael Davis picked up his first win of the season at VC Bristol’s 10-mile time trial on Saturday morning, with Joanne Jago securing success in the women’s event.

Fulfil the Potential Race Team’s Davis set 21-09 and secured victory by 13 seconds from John O’Dwyer (Dursley Road Club) who finished in 21-22 to narrowly edge 360VRT’s Karl Norris into third place by two seconds in 21-24, with places 2-4 separated by just four seconds.

Having previously finished second at the Velo Club Bristol 10-mile time trial on June 17 – his highest finish from his previous four events this season – Davis now has his first open time trial success since starting to compete in 2016.

After roadworks were set up on the initially-planned U17 25-mile course, the course was switched to the alternative U7B course at the last minute.

In the women’s event, Jago (Performance Cycles CC) won in a time of 25-35, while Bath CC’s Marianne Carpenter took the runners-up slot in 26-00 with a time of 28-05 seeing Joanna Knight (Bristol South Cycling Club) earn the final spot on the podium.

On her success, Jago said: “It was windier than I expected this morning and felt tough, so I was happy to get the quickest time.

“I haven’t raced much this year and was looking forward to racing a 25, so it’s a shame the course had to be shortened. I’m glad VC Bristol were still able to run the event though after putting the work in to organising it.”

In the road bike category, the winner was Andrew Metherwell from Salt and Sham beating Tom Bass from Velo Club Bristol by nine seconds with a time of 22-44.

Riders faced crosswinds and tailwinds on the outbound leg of the course, with a headwind on the return ensuring it was not a particularly quick day.

This 10-mile event, run on the U7B course, starts on the A38 half a mile south of Newport and heads north through Berkeley Road, over the railway bridges to Slimbridge roundabout where riders turn and retrace the course back along the A38 to finish just south of Newport.
