Jake Sargent and Nicki Carr were fastest male and female riders respectively at the University of Bristol CC 10-mile time trial near Stone in Gloucestershire on Saturday.
Almondsbury-based Sargent (Team Bottrill) clocked 20-07 to take victory by just over one minute from Henry Higgins (Caesarean CC Jersey) with 21-10, while third spot in the men’s event went to AeroCoach rider Nick English with 21-46.
In the women’s category Carr, the FTP Fulfil the Potential Racing rider from Axbridge, clocked 24-58 and was fastest by 45 seconds with second going to Avid Sport’s Josie Harcourt, while the promoting club’s own Poppy Marshall was third, another four minutes back.
The popular course uses the A38 and begins to the North of Woodford, heading up just beyond Gossington before turning at the Slimbridge roundabout.
“It was very cold at the start with temperatures close to zero on the start line,” said Sargent. “And there was a bit of snow falling on the drive over but not much wind.
“If I can get out to enough Western TTA Hardriders Series events this year it would be nice to take the title back, there are some new courses being used this year which I’m really looking forward to riding.”
This was Sargent’s third win in three open time trials so far in 2023, having already tasted victory in the Chippenham and District Wheelers 14 as well as Bath CC’s 24-mile, all of which were counting events for the Western TTA Hardriders Series.
He is next hoping to be in time trial action in two weeks at the Bristol South CC 25, while the Dursley RC 28.2-mile event on April 2 is also on his radar.
Third fastest female in this same event last year, Nicki Carr was nevertheless slower this time with conditions testing all the riders.
