Jake Sargent (Team Bottrill) hit the ground running by taking his second victory of the season at the Bath Cycling Club 24, while Kate Medlicott (Pronto Bikes) won the women’s event.

Sargent, aged 23, showed his impressive form recording a time of 50 minutes and 41 seconds – two minutes faster than his nearest rival.

There was a late course change the week of the event to a newly certified course due to roadworks.

Starting on Bradley Lane competitors raced down through Kilmington Common past the junction for the finish and onto the B3092.

Continuing the descent riders then kicked up for the roundabout joining the A361 and then turning for the testing return leg.

The new course was still a testing 24-mile rolling route which was harder on the return leg, but was without the sting of the climb out from Mere on the original route.

Conditions on the day were dry and overcast with little wind but bitterly cold – approximately six degrees Celsius with a couple snowflakes falling at the headquarters in Maiden Bradley.

Sargent also won the Chippenham & District Wheelers sporting 14-mile event last weekend and was again on sparking form recording an average speed of 28.41 miles per hour despite the testing terrain.

Robert Francis (Pronto Bikes) was a clear second placed finisher clocking 52-41, finishing ahead of James Pittard (Didcot Phoenix CC) who won a closer battle for third in 55-15.

Tony Chapman (Frome and District Wheelers) was the quickest veteran on scratch finishing fourth overall in 55-35 and was also the best rider on standard with +12.35 – calculated based on 25 miles.

In the women’s event Medlicott took her first ever open time trial victory recording a time of 1-08-53.

The 44-year-old Pronto Bikes rider finished second in the Severn RC sporting event of 12.2 miles last month but went one placing better on this occasion.

Pronto Bikes dominated the women’s podium placings with Liz Kemp finishing second in 1-09-17 just 19 seconds ahead of team-mate Lizzie Wilkinson in third (1-09-36).

Pronto Bikes also took the team prize with Morgan Curle, Joel Hyde and Robert Francis all contributing to make a time of 2-50-06.
