Joseph Turnbull earned his first ever open time trial win in the Yorkshire Cycling Federation 25-mile time trial on Saturday afternoon, with Abi Smith finishing as fastest female.

Harrogate Nova CC rider Turnbull set a formidable time of 53 minutes and 34 seconds to take victory.

He finished ahead of runner-up Mark Wolstenholme (VTTA Yorkshire) who clocked 54-48, while a time of 55-00 helped Deeside Thistle CC’s Calum Gibb to the final spot on the podium – just eight seconds ahead of Toby Simpson (Fietsen Tempo) who had to settle for fourth in 55-08.

It was a milestone win for 17-year-old Turnbull, whose previous open time trial best was fifth place at the ADDFORM Vive Le Velo 10.3-mile time trial on April 1 this year.

In the women’s event, Moonglu CC’s Smith was particularly impressive in recording 56-45 to take fastest female and also sixth place overall.

She finished a long way ahead of second-place Beth Grogan, of Selby CC, who finished in 1-03-24, while York Cycleworks rider Rebecca Mason clinched third place in 1-04-18.

The event, ran on the V235 course, started just south of Boroughbridge and headed south towards Walshford, with riders then following the A168 back past the start to Boroughbridge, before again heading back south to Walshford and north again on the A168 to finish just north of the start line.
