Shibden-HopeTech-Apex rider Cat Ferguson and Durham City Velo’s Euan Adam were fastest on time trial bikes at the Yorkshire Road Club 25-mile event in North Yorkshire on Saturday.
GB rider Ferguson, 17 and from near Skipton, clocked 59-56 and was the only female to go under the hour mark with second spot going to Josie Smith (Trek Sheffield) in 1-01-12 and her team-mate Sarah Harrison taking third with 1-04-32.
In the men’s event Adam’s time of 53-06 gave him the win by just five seconds from Seb Grindley (North Cheshire Clarion), while third was Mark Wolstenholme (VTTA Yorkshire) with 53-30.
“I was very pleased with the ride,” said Adam. “I was expecting to post a high 54 so when I came into mile 10 on such a good average I knew that I had to push on hard and make the most of it. The heat was challenging and that course is a real leg sapper but I was just desperate to leave it all out there.
“Coming into the season I still had hardly any racing experience so my two main goals were to pick up as much experience as possible in the 10 and 25 mile disciplines and to try and qualify for the National 10, hence I’ve raced twice in one weekend.
“The accessibility and friendliness of the events and community in the northeast and Yorkshire have made it really easy to pick up that extra experience!”
In the road bike category Rob Carter (Cleveland Wheelers) was fastest in 55-19 which was actually the fifth fastest time on any machine that day, while second went to Darren Yarwood (ADDFORM-Vive le Velo) with 58-53.
Top female on a road bike was Suzanne Noon (Queensbury Queens of the Mountain) with 1-17-11 which was 32 seconds quicker than runner-up Susan Sanders (Drighlington BC).
Euan Adam’s time was a new personal best over 25 miles by just one second (according to his CTT record) and is his second consecutive victory having also won the Sunderland Clarion 25-mile event the previous weekend.
His great form was clear to see prior to that, with second place in the Yorkshire Cycling Federation 10 back in March, as well as third in the Zeus CRT 10 last month.
He went on to finish fourth in Sunday’s GTR Return to Life 10 in a field stacked with quality, clocking a new personal best over 10 miles, and will similarly be aiming for strong rides in the Sowerby Sunday Club 10 in two weeks as well as the Barrow Central Wheelers 10 later in the month.
More used to tackling international cyclo-cross and road events, Cat Ferguson was competing in only her second open time trial, but will be aiming to get more times under her belt in the Blackburn and District CTC 10.6-mile event later in the year.
