Alan Murchison (HUUB WattShop) took a slender victory by just 16 seconds in the Newbury Velo 10, while Melanie Sneddon (TORQ Performance) was a clear winner in the women’s event.

Veteran rider Murchison, who celebrated his 52nd birthday earlier in the week, was in fine form and cooked up a winning time of 20 minutes and 25 seconds.

The H10/17R course saw competitors compete on an out-and-back course along the A420 between Kingston Bagpuize and the turn near Tubney Wood Quarry.

Calm weather greeted riders for Newbury Velo's first open time trial of the year with 41 riders taking the start over two events.

Murchison, from Winchester, finished runner-up in the Bournemouth Arrow 10 earlier in April and went one better this time out to take his first open victory of the season.

A close battle for the remaining podium positions saw three riders separated by just 21 seconds. Kevin Tye (VeloRefined Rule 5) took second in 20-31 which was five seconds faster than Nick English (AeroCoach) in 20-36, while Colin McDermott (Festival Road Club) was a further two seconds back (20-38).

Veteran rider Sneddon was a clear winner of the women’s event stopping the clock in a time of 22-46 which was almost a minute clear of her nearest challenger.

The 47-year-old also won the Penzance Wheelers 10 earlier this month and added her second open time trial of the season in emphatic style.

Fellow veteran Kirsty McSeveney (a3crg) finished second in 23-42 ahead of third placed Janet Birkmyre (TORQ Performance) in 24-03.

The tandem category was once again dominated by the fast pairing of Ian Greenstreet and Rachael Elliott (Newbury Velo) who recorded the quickest time of the day stopping the clock in 20-04.
