Nicholas Fennell

Nicholas Fennell (Thanet RC) and Ida Smith (Onyx RT) were fastest at the VTTA Kent 10 on Saturday morning, while in the veterans’ categories Smith was also victorious as well as Mark Hill (VeloRefined Rule 5).

Fennell clocked 20-05 to finish as fastest by 1-07 from Alex Milne (Ashford Tri Club) with Mark Hill (VeloRefined Rule 5) third, another seven seconds back.

And Ida Smith (Onyx RT) was fastest female with her time of 24-20, which gave her the win in that category by 1-44 from Rebecca Wilson (Rye and District Wh), with third being Debbie Percival (Kent Velo Girls/Boys) who was another eight seconds off the pace.

In the category for veterans on age adjusted times Mark Hill proved fastest with 20-01, 14 seconds ahead of Sydenham Wheelers’ 67-year-old Richard Birtwhistle. Third was a tie between Pete Elms (VC Deal) and Simon Henderson of Thanet Road Club both with 20-19.

The women’s category for veterans on age adjusted times was also won by Ida Smith with 21-34, although Percival and Wilson switched with Percival’s adjusted time being 21-39 and Wilson’s 21-55.

This was victory number 15 for Fennell in open time trialling this season, with his recent wins including the Kent CA 25 and VTTA Kent 50 as well as last weekend’s Thanet Road Club 10.

“My legs felt alright but it was a tough morning on the course with the southerly breeze and the rain,” said Fennell.

“I got a bit unlucky with the traffic at the very first junction, which likely cost me the 19. I can't complain as I have been fairly lucky avoiding hold ups this season.

“The return leg felt very sticky compared to normal on that stretch of road. Shame to just miss the 19-minute mark but I am now looking forward to another attempt at the course in a few weeks.”

Starting near Orlestone to the south of Ashford, the Q10/1 course took the competitors north on the A2070, turning south of Ashford and heading back down and finishing south of Hamstreet.
