Nic Fennell

Nicholas Fennell (Thanet RC) was the quickest by over five minutes in the VTTA Kent Group Champs 50, while Mark Hill (VeloRefined Rule 5) was the best veteran on standard.

Fennell stormed around two laps of the Kent course in a time of one hour, 44 minutes and 31 seconds.

The Q50/11 saw competitors start near Hamstreet before heading out on the A2070 to the Brenzett Roundabout and then joining the two-lap course.

First competitors headed onto the A259 to East Gulderford before joining Camber Road to the coastal town of Camber and then continuing to Lydd.

Riders then picked up the B2075 to New Romney before re-joining the A259 at New Romney to compete a lap completed twice before the leg back to Hamstreet.

Scratch rider Fennell was on superior form taking his 11th open time trial victory of the season finishing 5-35 clear of his closest challenger.

Peter Robertson (Lea Valley CC) finished second behind Fennell in the Thanet RC 25 two weeks earlier and repeated that result stopping the clock in 1-50-06.

Wrapping up the podium positions on scratch was Mark Hill (VeloRefined Rule 5) who recorded a time of 1-52-28.

“I wasn't expecting it to be a good day as the weather forecast didn't look particularly good with rains showers and high air pressure forcast,” said Fennell.

“Luckily it was a still morning and the rain mostly stayed away during my ride, I only got a few light showers.

“At the start I didn't feel like I was on a good day and it took a good 15 miles for my legs to wake up. I took it very easy on the corners as the roads were a bit greasy in places and it's quite a rough and technical course, so didn't want to take any risks on the wet roads.

“I rode into form during the course of the race and finished really strongly. I finished with a course personal best, which I was very pleased to find out.”

With a third placed finish on scratch Hill, aged 55, was the quickest veteran on standard using age adjusted time with his time reduced to 1-45-50.

Simon Henderson (Thanet RC) was second on age adjusted time in 1-47-58, while Chris Jones (Bynea Cycling Club) was third (1-48-53).

There were no female competitors and the only trike rider was Mark Vowells (San Fairy Ann CC) who stopped the clock in 2-18-57.
