Kevin Chant

Kevin Chant and Dominique Munday battled through challenging conditions to take victories at the Wightlink-Island Renewables 35-kilometre time trial on the Isle of Wight on Sunday.

Using the Military Road from Yarmouth to Chale and back, the event featured four climbs to challenge riders as well as the rain causing issues for some.

But as ever the fast riders seem immune to the perils of the weather, and pre-race favourite Chant justified his seeding with a time of 47-28 which gave him a comfortable win by 4-19 from Christopher Till (NAUT Cycling).

Third overall – and fastest on a road bike – was Nicholas Earley (Wightlink-Wight Mountain RT) with 52-44, who was two and a half minutes faster than road bike runner-up and Wightlink team-mate Charles Orchard.

Fastest female overall was also the fastest female on a road bike, with Munday (NAUT Cycling) clocking 1-00-36 to win by 52 seconds from Charis Jones (Wight Tri), with third being Poole Wheelers’ Louisa Cooper in 1-01-52.

The fastest over-40 veteran was Paul Forster (NAUT Cycling) whose time of 54-16 gave him fourth spot overall, and he was 55 seconds quicker than second in that age group, Stephen Boxall (Houghton CC).

Dominique Munday

Fastest over-50 was Martin Piper (NAUT Cycling) in 55-21, 36 seconds quicker than runner-up and team-mate Sean Williams, while the over-60s winner was another NAUT Cycling rider Steve Taylor who covered the course in 59-48.

Quickest female veteran was Louise Cooper in third overall, while top junior was Ewan Cook (Wightlink-Wight Mountain RT) with 56-10, 2-22 better than second junior Billy Williams (NAUT Cycling). Fastest junior girl was Annabelle Steward (Isle of Wight Triathlon Club) in 1-32-38.
