Angela Carpenter

Angela Carpenter was quickest female at the a3crg 10-mile time trial in Liss on Sunday morning, with Sam Wadsley finishing as fastest male.

Riding for the promoting club, Carpenter finished in 21-24 while team-mate Claire Emons ensured a one-two on their home course in 22-11, ahead of DRAG2ZERO rider Lisa Davies who recorded 22-43 to seal a deserved third place.

In a tight men’s event in which the top three were separated by just 10 seconds, Wadsley (Primera-Teamjobs) lived up to his status of pre-race Spindata favourite and even beat his predicted time of 19-05 in going 18-46 over the course.

Wadsley now has two wins from his last three races, all over 10-mile distance, with success in the Poole Wheelers CC time trial on June 18 followed by a runners-up spot at the a3crg Goodwood Closed Circuit time trial on July 1.

Sam Wadsley

On his win, Wadsley said: “I’m pleased with my ride considering I don’t normally perform my best during early morning events.

“Even a 4.30am alarm wasn’t enough to wake me up and get my legs going! Very fortunate to stay dry for the majority of my ride with rain beginning fall in final five minutes.

“My heart goes out to Alastair Luxford who I think was a couple seconds up on me before suffering a mechanical issue at mile nine!

“It is nice to get another open win under my belt and get back into the 18s as I haven’t managed one since 2021.”

Paul Wilcox also significantly outperformed expectations to clock 18-51 and finish as narrow runner-up ahead of Southampton University RC rider Gabe Dellar, who finished in 18-56 for third spot.

Riders were met with dry and still conditions today on the course and while later riders did catch a rain it did not fall as heavily as predicted.

Elsewhere, Thomas Willan won the road bike category in an impressive 20-29, but scratch rider Alistair Luxford suffered a mechanical issue over the final two miles and could not challenge the top contenders on the day.

The men's team prize went to the trio from Poole Wheelers CC and, thanks to the efforts of Carpenter and Emons, the women’s went to a3crg.

This event, run on the P881/10 course, starts north of Liss on the A3 and heads south before turning north easterly through Longmoor Ranges and continuing on the A3 to Bramshott before turning and following back southbound to finish just south of Greatham.
