Paul Jones

Paul Jones was the only rider to break the one-hour mark giving him victory in the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 42-kilometre event, while road bike rider Sien Van Der Plank (New Forest CC) was the quickest woman.

Veteran rider Jones opened his account for 2023 with a winning time of 59 minutes and 53 seconds.

The P454 course used two-and-a-quarter laps of a course used during the National 10-mile Championships in 2021.

Starting near East Stoke competitors headed out to Wool before joining the B3071 up through the finish and continuing to climb to the Lulworth Camp.

After the toughest part of the course riders then joined the B3070 through East Lulworth and West Holme Heath and then turning back to the start on Holme Lane.

The course was dry for the event, but there was a tough headwind on one section which impacted times.

Jones, aged 52, from Bournemouth, also won the Sotonia 10 last season and opened his account for the season with another open victory.

Fellow veteran Tom Clements (Wessex Road Club) was the only rider to challenge Jones finishing 17 seconds behind in 1-00-10.

Meanwhile, Steven Pink (Poole Wheelers Cycling Club) finished third stopping the clock in 1-03-02.

“I was hoping to win,” said Jones. “I have won the event quite a few times in the past. I thought it was possible again. As it’s quite rural the traffic was very light.

“My previous best was just over the hour in much better conditions. I was quite surprised to go under (the hour) on that course.

“I’ve not made any changes to my bike this off-season but incorporated weight training after advice from my coach Julia Shaw.

“I’m now building to my first goal of the tour of Cambridge TT with the aim of qualifying for worlds.”

Veteran rider Emma Caplan (Bournemouth Jubilee Whs) was the only women’s competitor on a time trial bike and completed the course in 1-13-23.

In the road bike competition under-23 rider Jamie Whitcher (Bournemouth Cycleworks - Vitec Fire - Ford Civil – Trek) went fastest with an impressive time of 1-00-32.

Poole Wheelers Cycling Club riders completed the podium positions with Tom Nancarrow (1-01-23) and Alex Rowling (1-03-26) finishing second and third respectively.

Quickest junior on a road bike was George Mahon (Poole Wheelers Cycling Club) who finished sixth in the category posting a time of 1-04-32.

In the women’s road bike category Van Der Plank (New Forest CC) posted a winning time of 1-12-51 -which was the fastest posted by a female competitor in the event.

Louisa Cooper (Poole Wheelers Cycling Club) was second in the category clocking 1-14-55 while her Poole team-mate Sian McPherson was third (1-16-56).
