George Fox overcame mechanical issues to claim victory in the men’s event at the Northampton & District Cycling Association 10-mile time trial in Sawtry on Saturday morning, with the title of fastest woman claimed by Melissa Denman.
Riding for George Fox Cycling Solutions, Fox lived up to his status as pre-race Spindata favourite to set an unbeaten time of 20-14 - despite suffering issues with his rear mech that led to his gear being stuck in 60x13 for the entire ride.
Elsewhere in the field, Peterborough CC’s Paul Pardoe finished runner-up in 20-21 and Sam McDonald, of St Neots CC, clocked 20-36 to take the final spot on the podium.
In the women’s event, Velo Bavarian rider Denman stopped the clock in 24-10 to take victory by over a minute.
Behind, a time of 25-11 meant Hayley Moore (Ilkeston Cycle Club) was just four seconds clear of third-placed Lindsay Clarke, riding for Fenland Clarion, who managed 25-15.
A time of 22-22 helped Caspar Raynard (University of Leeds Cycling Club) win the men’s road bike category ahead of veteran Patrick Ellerbeck (St Neots CC) in second (24-19) and Noel Toone (Kettering CC) took third (27-24).
Lynne Scofield (Rockingham Forest Wheelers) was the only woman road bike competitors and completed the course in 30-55.
Riders faced blustery conditions throughout on the rolling out and back single carriageway course parallel to the A1.
The event, held on course N1/10, started just east of Sawtry and headed north on the B1043 through Stilton before turning to follow the route back to Sawtry and finished just north of the start line.
