Adam Duggleby (ADDFORM Vive Le Velo) and Kate Allan (Team Bottrill) took advantage of the fast course to record personal best times on their way to winning the men’s and women’s events respectively at the Icknield RC 10.
Duggleby, aged 38, stormed around the course in a winning time of 17 minutes and 39 seconds - beating his nearest competitor by 16 seconds.
Meanwhile, National 10 and 25-mile Champion Allan posted the third fastest time in competition history of 19 minutes and 21 seconds.
Also taking advantage of the fast course was Leon Atkins (Welwyn Whs) whose time of 18-01 is a new juvenile competition record – knocking 14 seconds off Finlay Tarling’s mark of 18-15 set last year.
Starting outside Tring riders competed along the A41 heading west to the turn at Wigginton on the opening leg coming after two miles.
Riders then retracted their steps back up the A41 to the roundabout with Aston Clinton Road, coming at eight miles, and then the final leg to the finish.
Duggleby, from Leeds, finished fourth in the National 10-mile Championship in 18-20 on his last outing and on the faster Tring course.
Jake Sargent (Team Bottrill) also broke the 18-minute barrier finishing second in 17-55, while juvenile Atkins completed the overall podium positions in 18.01.
“I’m pretty happy with a lifetime best,” said Duggleby.
“It was warmer than I expected to be fair. The heat made conditions faster but also harder and I felt like I was over-heating after five miles.
“It felt like a hard course at times and then I looked down and was going fast. I was going as fast as I could but couldn’t get the power out at times as I was already going over 40 miles per hour.
“I was looking at the short distance BAR results before the event and was just 0.1 miles per hour from leading it. I smashed my previous time by a mile so I’m now leading.”
George Fox (George Fox Cycling Solutions) came just 10 seconds short of his road bike competition record of 18-00, stopping the clock in 18-10 this time out.
Quickest veteran on scratch was Paul Burton (Paceline RT) who stopped the clock in a winning time of 18-12 for fifth overall.
In the women’s event Allan, aged 38, from Maidenhead, knocked 17 seconds off her personal best time and set a new course record of 19-21 – beating Hayley Simmonds’ previous mark of 19-34.
Emily Martin (Team Bottrill) finished second in 19-54, while veteran rider Sally Turner (HUUB WattShop) completed the podium positions (20-24).
“It was really good,” said Allan. “I paced it really well and it felt relatively fast.
“My stomach was playing up so it took my mind off my legs. Whether it was an end of season thing but my head wasn’t ready to take it on, but my ride went really well still.”
The quickest tandem was the Newbury Velo pair of Andy Tucker and Richard Cornes who stopped the clock in 19-13. The mixed gender tandem of Stuart and Skye Martingale (Sotonia CC) were second in 21-55.
Meanwhile, the A5 Rangers CC tandem pair of Murray Kirton and David Stockley had a combined age of 170 and stopped the clock in 24-26.
