Michael Gill (HUUB-WattShop) set a new course record at the Chronos RT 10-mile time trial in Cambridgeshire on Saturday, while Jessica Rhodes-Jones (AeroCoach) wasn’t far off doing the same in the women’s category as she took victory too.

Gill clocked 17-40 to slice ten seconds from James Jenkins’ previous record set three weeks ago, and take the win on the day by 37 seconds from Nicholas Trbovic (Elysium Kalas RT), while third went to veteran Andy Critchlow (Paceline RT) with 18-43.

“I was very happy to win and take the course record,” said Gill. “The Chronos RT event is one I enjoy having ridden it the past four years.

“The conditions to the turn were quite challenging so I was very pleased with the ride I put together. The return leg was certainly a lot more pleasant!”

Rhodes-Jones clocked 20-56 which was just 18 seconds away from the women’s course record held by Becky Ridge. Yesterday’s time was good enough for victory by 58 seconds from Mathilde Pauls (Look Mum no Hands!), while Angela Carpenter (a3crg) was third with 22-06.

“It was a super strong gusty headwind on the outward leg for everyone, which standing on the start line sheltered by the trees you couldn’t really feel,” explained Rhodes-Jones. “But as soon as you got onto the dual carriageway it hit you!

“I had an average speed of 40kph on the way out and over 54kph on the way back for me, thankfully the turn came just under halfway making it a longer return leg with a tailwind than the outward leg!”

The last man off in a field stacked with quality, Gill better the time Spindata had predicted he would clock by 34 seconds, while Trbovic was also better than tipped, moving up from a predicted sixth to second.

Spindata had Carpenter down to be fastest female, but in reality Rhodes-Jones went faster than predicted to take the win.

This was only the second time this season that Rhodes-Jones has ridden an open time trial this season, having previously taken victory at the Chippenham and District Wheelers 10 back in May.

In the road bike category victory went to John Manlow (Ely and District CC) with 21-41, 43 seconds better than runner-up Mayhew Eley (Ely & District CC). The prize for the fastest female on a road bike went to Kerry Brennand (Newmarket C&TC) with 25-12, just ten seconds faster than team-mate and runner-up Judy Brown.

The event used the F2a/10 course which begins to the east of Cambourne and heads from the Hardwick Interchange along the A428 westwards to Caxton Gibbet where they turn back for the finish just beyond the start point.
