Ross Clarke earned his first open time trial victory since 2019 in the men’s event at the Verulam Cycling Club 10-mile time trial in Bedfordshire on Sunday morning, while Emily Robertson finished as quickest female.
TMG Horizon Cycling Team’s Clarke clocked 50-44 on his way to success ahead of Ross Harper, riding for the promoting club, who completed the course in 53-02 with Verulam-Really Moving’s Matthew Wright taking the final podium spot in 53-41.
Clarke lived up to his status as pre-race Spindata favourite, managing to knock 28 seconds off his predicted time, while Harper and Wright both went more than a minute quicker than their estimated times.
Before this success, Clarke’s best results this season were a trio of third-placed finishes - first at the Shaftesbury CC Open 25-mile time trial in April, then May’s North Road CC 25-mile with another coming at The Viking 50-mile time trial organised by Cambridge CC on June 24.
In the women’s event, Robertson (Bedfordshire Road RT) was the only female to go under an hour in 59-10 and on a road bike too, with second-placed Emily Varley (Hitchin Nomads) finishing in exactly 1:00-00 to seal the runners-up spot ahead of the 1:01-36 set by Robertson’s clubmate Miriam Taylor-Carter.
This event, run on the F1B/25 course, starts on the B1043 just north of Tempsford and heads south to join the A1 and continues past Sandy and Biggleswade to turn two miles north of Baldock, then returning back northbound to finish north of Tempsford Village Hall.
