Neil Harris (Southborough & District Wheelers) and Kim Barfoot-Brace (Team Bottrill) took advantage of good conditions to take the men’s and women’s victories in the Cambridge CC (The Viking 50).
Harris, aged 41, took his second open time trial victory in as many rides posting a winning time of one hour, 38 minutes and 43 seconds.
The F2/50 saw riders start near Childerley Gate before joining the A428 before completing almost four out and back loops of the A428 between Cambourne and Madingley.
Riders were met by hot conditions and a favourable south-westerly wind which can prove elusive on the A428.
Veteran rider Harris also won the Southborough & District Wheelers 10 last month and proved strongest over the 50-mile distance.
A close battle for the podium positions saw the top six riders separated by less than two minutes over the 50-mile distance.
Tom Hutchinson (Team Bottrill) led the chase behind finishing second in 1-39-29 which was 21 seconds quicker than South Wales veteran Anthony Jones (VMCC powered by Y Beic) in 1-39-50.
Spindata had predicted a victory for Harris in 1-38-57 but in reality the veteran lowered that time by 14 seconds.
After finishing third overall Jones was also the quickest veteran on age adjusted time with his 1-39-50 being reduced to 1-36-11.
Second on age adjusted time was Dave Green (CC Breckland) while Deborah Sheridan (Warwickshire Road Club) was third.
In the women’s event Barfoot-Brace stopped the clock in a winning time of one hour, 52 minutes and 58 seconds.
Veteran rider Barfoot-Brace, from Farmborough, also won the FTP Racing 25 last month and was again top of the podium on this occasion.
Leading the charge behind was Emily Robertson (Bedfordshire Road CC) in second (1-59-05) and Emily Varley (Hitchin Nomads CC) finished third (2-01-30).
“It was good to get the win,” said Barfoot-Brace. “It was so hot, about 30 degrees Celsius and it was windier than people thought it was going to be, so wasn’t as fast day as everybody thought.
“I lost one of my two water bottles halfway round so I only had half the drink I usually have. On the last lap of four I was so dehydrated I was hallucinating and trying to stay up right.
“On the ride back to the headquarters I felt terrible and when I got back to my vehicle I was glad to still be alive.
“It was tough so I’m very pleased to get the win.”
