Leon Atkins earned a fourth win from nine events with success in the men’s category at the Fred Meekcoms Memorial Trophy promoted by Whitewebbs Cycling Club on Saturday evening, with fastest woman being Eva Zsigoova.
In a time of 18-53, Welwyn Wheelers rider Atkins saw off competition from pre-race Spindata favourite Alastair Luxford (Full Gas Racing Team) who clocked 19-17, while Drag2Zero’s Mark Jones claimed the final podium spot in 19-44.
Atkins, at 14 years of age, has competed in nine open time trials, winning the National Youth Championship 10-mile time trial in both 2022 and 2023 as well as the National Juvenile Closed Circuit Championship at Thruxton in October 2022.
He has also finished third at the Hemel Hempstead CC 25-mile time trial and fifth at the North Road CC Hardriders 25-mile time trial so far this season.
Zsigoova set a time of 27-50 as the a3crg rider secured success in the women’s category.
This 10-mile event, held on the F20/10 course, is a simple out-and-back that starts just west of Pinehurst and heads southbound past Hoddesdon and Broxbourne, turning at Turnford and returning along the same route to finish just north of the start line.
In gloriously sunny conditions, 25 riders started the race with only Sam Brown forced to retire due to a puncture, while Whitewebbs CC founder member Frank Rasey was on hand to present the prizes.
