Hannah Bayes took victory for hosting club Saint Piran in their hill climb on Mount Wellington, while junior Oliver Wade (Mid Devon Cycling Club) won the men’s event.
Bayes, aged 23, recorded a time of three minutes and 46 seconds up the 1.3-kilometre climb which has an average gradient of 5.6%.
The win was Bayes’ first of the hill climb season after finishing 10th in the National Road Bike Championship two weeks earlier.
Two years ago Bayes finished second in the Mount Wellington hill climb, but she was not to be denied this time finishing a minute ahead of her nearest challenger.
Sophie Butcher (Tri Logic Cornwall) was competing in her first open hill climb and was the only other woman – finishing second in 4-46.
In the men’s event Wade was the only rider to break the three-minute mark with the junior rider taking victory in two minutes and 54 seconds.
Wade was runner-up in last year’s event on Mount Wellington but bettered his time by three seconds to take victory this time out.
Tristan Kelsall-Spurr (Exeter Whs CC) finished third in the Tavistock Wheelers hill climb on Rundlestone last month and went one better to finish runner-up in 3-05.
Completing the men’s podium positions was Jonathan Hobbs (Okehampton CC) who finished a further three seconds back (3-08).
Host club rider Phil MacFarlane was the quickest in the veteran’s category in 3-57, ahead of Dean Wickett (Launceston Velo) in second (4-33) and Bob Symons (PDQ Cycle Coaching) in third (6-48).
