Paul Burton

Paul Burton earned a third win from his last four events in the male category at the East Anglian VTTA 25-mile time trial in Cambridgeshire on Sunday morning, with fastest female going to Linda Dewhurst.

Paceline RT rider Burton set 47-30 on his way to success, with a time of 48-40 helping George Fox (George Fox Cycling Solutions) to second place, and North Road CC’s Paul Willcox taking the final podium spot in 48-57.

Dewhurst, riding for  Team Milton Keynes, came home in 58-27 for the top women’s prize, ahead of Cambridge University CC’s Lucy Havard in 59-19, and third place going to Sue Triplow of CC Sudbury in 1:01-26.

Burton, who was second favourite pre-race behind Ollie Hucks according to Spindata, now has five wins from 10 open time trials so far this season.

“My form has been good for a number of weeks now, mixing it up with both road racing and time trials,” said Burton.

“The course was super tough in a stiff south westerly, making it a slog out to the turn but very fast and fun back. I think I measured my effort well and delighted to take the win in a good field.

“The only shame was that the favourite Ollie Hucks’ TT bike was out of action so he was only on his road bike. It’s the first and only time I’ll overtake him in a time trial!

“The day’s racing was made better to learn that my Paceline RT team-mate Andy Critchlow also won down in Sussex, following a great win from another team-mate Pat Wright last weekend. Between us we are racking up some great wins this year.”

Elsewhere, first road bike was earned by Hucks, riding for Kalas Motip, in 50-42, while fastest juvenile woman went to Stonham Barns Park SYRT rider Abbey Thompson in 1:09-07.

Fastest man on veteran on standard time was Paul Willcox (North Road CC) in 47-50, while Linda Dewhurst, riding for Team Milton Keynes, was fastest woman on adjusted time in 45-39 and the best team on age adjusted time was Legato Racing Team trio Mark Hamer, Tony Ball and Steven Loraine in 1:31-11.

Riders faced challenging conditions with a head-on south west wind on the route towards Caxton Gibbet, then a tail win to the Madingley turn, although they also enjoyed dry weather on the course.

This event, run on the F2A/25 course, starts just south of Madingley, with riders heading west along the A428 past Hardwick to turn at the Cambourne roundabout and return along the same route, to complete four laps to finish just north of the start line.
