Karen Aylen (Maldon and District CC) and Timothy Torrie (trainSharp) powered to victories at the Maldon and District CC 10-mile time trial in Essex on Saturday afternoon.

Aylen, 52 and riding for the promoting club, clocked 24-49 to win the women’s category by 1-43 from Easterley Road Club’s Julia Freeman, with third being Cambridge CC’s Ann Shuttleworth with 29-29 which was also the quickest time for a female on a road bike.

Torrie clocked 20-34, the 23-year-old trainSharp rider from Chelmsford taking the win by 1-08 from Paul Hart (Hart Performance Coaching) who was fastest on a road bike, while third overall went to Chelmer CC’s Peter Harding who was another 25 seconds back.

The event was also a district heat of the National Youth Championship, with Charles Langford (Southend Wheelers) proving fastest in 23-50, while top girl was Erica Dodsworth (Maldon & District CC) in 33-08.

This was Torrie’s second win of the season so far, having taken victory in the CC Sudbury 22-mile event back in March. Since then he was part of the trainSharp team which finished third at the National Team Time Trial Championships in May.

He is next due to be in action at the National 50-Mile Championship, where he will be aiming to post a 50-mile time for the first time according to his CTT profile.

“I had a run of illnesses in April, I’m just getting back into form really,” said Torrie. “I’m a little off the pace I want to be on it was nice to win on Sunday but there’s still a little missing.

“The Maldon is one of those tough courses that should theoretically be fast but rarely is, save for a few perfect days. Still, a podium in the National Team TT Championships last month wasn’t a bad start.”

Aylen’s win was number three for the season for her, having previously won the Maldon and District CC events over 25 and 50 miles in May using similar roads to today’s event. Next weekend she is due to tackle the Basildon CC 50 before the National 50-Mile Championships the weekend after that.

The event used the E21/10 course which uses minor roads to the east of Steeple in Essex, heading up to Bradwell on Sea before looping round and back down to the finish.
