Grant Bigham and Deb Hutson-Lumb were fastest male and female riders respectively, as Wrekinsport CC staged a 10-mile event on a new course near Shawbury in Shropshire on Saturday afternoon.
Bigham set the first course record for the new D310/3 of 20 minutes and 30 seconds, giving him the win on the day by 58 seconds from Dean Callister (Revolutions Racing) with Tomos Hales (Wrekinsport CC) being just three seconds further off the pace in third.
Hutson-Lumb took the win for the promoting club with 23-33, which was 43 seconds better than second female Hayley Wells (Paramount CRT), with Sorrel Williams (AeroCoach) being third in that category with 26-16.
“I enjoyed the new course which is on a reasonably wide, relatively quiet and well surfaced A road,” said Hutson-Lumb. “The conditions however weren't much fun with less help than expected from the tailwind on the way out.
“I found the longer leg back into the wind and rain really tough and power was dropping away towards the end. I was pleased with my time though, and looking forward to riding it again in better conditions.
“I had a slow start to the season as I was badly affected by high pollen triggering asthma. I seem to be bringing that under control now and finding some late season, albeit rather variable, form.”
This was just the latest in a string of victories for Hutson-Lumb, who is enjoying a great season which has seen her post a personal best time over 10 miles of 23-12 in June.
Other wins for the 58-year-old in 2023 include the Shropshire CCA 25, Birkenhead North End CC 25 and the Chester RC 25 and Ludlow CC 10 in June, as well as the Mid-Shropshire Wheelers 50, the West Cheshire TTCA 30 and Velotik 15 earlier in the season.
This was open time trial number six for Bigham, who has now notched up three victories following wins at the Stafford RC 10 in May as well as the Mid-Shropshire Wheelers 10 back in June.
“It was great to take the win on a brand new course despite going into the race without too much idea of what to expect,” said Grant Bigham. “I’m generally pretty happy with my ride albeit not too well paced and heavily weather affected it to say the least!
“There were really smooth roads though so plenty of potential for some fast times on the course in the future. The organisers in Shropshire do a great job creating some challenging courses and there’s always a good atmosphere at every race.”
Next Saturday he will be targeting another victory at the Wigan Wheelers 10 on the Levens course in Cumbria.
