Kieran Morris (Total Tri Training) and Deb Hutson-Lumb (Wrekinsport CC) were fastest male and female riders at the Shropshire CCA 25-Mile Championship near Welshpool in Powys on Thursday evening.

Morris, 22 and from Wrexham, covered the course in a new personal best time of 49-59 and take victory by a healthy margin of 3-01 from Wrekinsport CC’s Tomos Hales, while third spot went to RAF CA’s Daniel Watts who was just three seconds further back.

Hutson-Lumb, the 58-year-old Wrekinsport CC rider, clocked 1-01-00 for the D25/24r course, which gave her victory in the women’s category by just over five minutes from Hafren CC’s Jan Davies who was tackling the distance for the first time, while third was Helen Tudor (Oswestry Paragon CC) with 1-07-06.

It was a warm and sunny evening on the A483, with riders starting near Refail and heading north to the turn at Four Crosses. However, a headwind on the return leg caused problems for some.

Morris has been pushing for a sub-50 minute time for a while but just come up short, so it was satisfying for him to finally crack the barrier and take the win ahead of Hales, who was riding his second 25-mile event in two days and also setting a new personal best.

This was Morris’s second open time trial win of the season following his victory in the Yorkshire CF 10 back in Marsh, although he will be aiming for more glory when he tackles the Oswestry Paragon CC 10 in a couple of weeks.

Hutson-Lumb has shown some good form this season, and this was the seventh time she has been the fastest female. Last weekend she won the Birkenhead North End CC 25, while previous victories include the Chester RC 25 and Ludlow CC 10 in June as well as the Mid-Shropshire Wheelers 50 and West Cheshire TTA 30 in May.

Next up for her is the Legato Racing Team 10 next Sunday, as well as the Oswestry Paragon CC midweek 10 the following Thursday.

On road bikes, James Elgar (Paramount CRT) was fastest with 1-06-05, while quickest female was Victoria Doran (Wrekinsport CC) in 1-12-24.
