Grant Bigham (HUUB WattShop) and Keri Parton (Team Boompods) were the quickest male and female riders respectively in the Mid Shropshire Wheelers 10.

Bigham, aged 33, was the only rider to break the 20-minute barrier posting a winning time of 19 minutes and 54 seconds – to win the men’s event by over a minute.

The D10/23R saw riders start in Waters Upton, Shropshire, before heading north out to Hodnet before making the return journey.

Riders were treated to sunny conditions for the Shropshire event on Saturday but had to face a slight wind which impacted times somewhat.

Bigham, who also won the Stafford RC 10 last month, was in superior form to take his second open time trial victory of the season.

Quickest veteran on scratch Victor Chetta (Mid Shropshire Wheelers) led the battle behind stopping the clock in 21-06 for second which was 10 seconds faster than Tomos Hales (Wrekinsport CC).

Spindata had predicted a victory for Bigham in 19-57 and he improved that mark by three seconds.

“It was fairly hot and humid, I really like that 10 course to be fair,” said Bigham. “The conditions allowed for an even pace with a tailwind back up the drag and a headwind out down the slope.

“It’s a course which is borderline for me if I can get under the 20 minutes mark or not so I was really happy.

“I’m going to do a few more races in the area as the organisers always do a fantastic job and I love being part of their events.”

Hales also helped Wrekinsport CC to the team award alongside Christopher Halford and Philip Roberts.

The event also served as a qualification round for the National Youth Championship and quickest junior Max Bufton (Tofauti Everyone Active) posted an impressive 20-58 which was the second quickest time recorded on the day – despite being slightly delayed by traffic on the course.

Chester Romei (Paramount CRT) was second in the juniors’ category in 24-51, while Oliver Liptrot (Graham Weigh Racing-Deeside Olympic) was third (27-32).

In the junior girls’ event Ailsling Charlesworth (Fibrax Wrexham RC) took victory in 26-04 on her road bike, just five seconds quicker than Evelyn Field (JRC Interflon Race Team) in 26-09.

Parton, aged 34, was the fastest woman stopping the clock in 22-41 – two minutes faster than her nearest competitor.

Veteran rider Deb Hutson-Lumb (Wrekinsport CC) was second woman in 23-43, while Thea Osmund-Smith (Paramount CRT) finished third (25-34).

Hutson-Lumb was also the quickest veteran on age adjusted time with her time being reduced to 19-34.

“It was good but really humid,” said Parton. “I was off later when the traffic had died down. I’ve done the course a few times and it’s a bit lumpier on the way back which was into a headwind yesterday.

“It wasn’t the quickest day, but I’m happy enough with my time. I’ve only gone four seconds quicker in the past so I was pleased as the conditions weren’t the best.

“I’m hoping to set a personal best in the next few weeks over 10 miles and then the National 10-mile Championship. I quite like 10s as they are quick enough but also hard.”

The road bike competition was closely fought with Nick Giles (Pocomotion Road Club) posting the quickest time of 23-20, just seven seconds quicker than Alvydas Janusauskas (Mid Shropshire Wheelers) in second (23-27) and Peter Jukes (Mid Shropshire Wheelers) in third (26-12).
