Mark Parsons secured a dramatic two-second victory in an extremely tight men’s event at the Southport Cycling Club 25-mile time trial in Lancashire on Saturday, with Deborah Moss the fastest woman.
Parsons lived up to his pre-race status as Spindata favourite, beating his predicted time of 20-46 by 23 seconds to finish in 20-23, just two seconds ahead of joint-runners up Alan Broadbent (Graham Weigh Racing-Deeside Olympic) and Tony Greenhalgh (Tactic Sport UK Race Team) who both crossed the line in 20-25.
Moss, riding for Springfield Financial Racing Team, followed up her first place at the VTTA National 50 Championship on June 10 with another dominant victory, finishing in 22-08 – just four seconds outside the course record.
She was ahead of 360Cycling’s Katherine Swithenbank who clocked 23-30 for second place while East Lancashire RC’s Karen Bailey sealed the final podium spot in 24-17.
Moss also won the Age Adjusted Veterans category in an adjusted time of 18-48, with the team prize going to Graham Weigh Racing-Deeside Olympic trio Alan Broadbent, Ben Love and Barry Murphy in an aggregate time of 63-21.
Elsewhere, Reuben Corlett’s fourth place overall in 20-43 also saw him finish as first Junior with Liam Davison fastest Espoir in 21-24 and quickest Juvenile going to Davey Allanson in 21-47, while the Junior Female Award was given to Jamie Leigh Lloyd for her time of 26-11.
Barry Murphy was fastest Veteran 40+ in 20-49, with a time of 21-09 helping Roy Neild to the Veteran 50+ prize, the Veteran 60+ claimed by Ken Addison in 20-07, while Dave Isherwood was Veteran 70+ in 19-37 and a time of 19-51 helping Alex Munro to the Scottish VTTA title.
This event, run on the D33/10 course, starts just west of Tarleton and heads westbound along the A565 past Mere Brow until reaching the Banks roundabout where riders turn and retrace to Mere Brow and return to Banks roundabout, then turn again and retrace the route to finish west of the start line on the A565.
