Jozsef Owen set a new course record on his way to victory in the men’s event at the West Cheshire Time Trials Cycling Association 10-mile time trial on Saturday afternoon, with Lucy Morley sealing the prize for fastest female.

Fibrax Wrexham RC rider Owen lowered the current course mark to 20-29 in near-perfect sunny conditions to continue recent fine form, with David James Williams (Velotik Racing) recording 20-43 for second place and Owen’s teammate Ben Goodwin just five seconds back in 20-48 for the final podium spot.

“I was quietly confident and hoping to perform,” said Owen. “I’ve had some good results on the road so I was hoping to translate that to the time trial. It’s my first win of the season and it’s been building.

“The weather was lovely with a slight tailwind on the outbound section, I was fortunate to have a clean run without obstruction, so it was a good performance and has matched my best performance for a 10-mile time trial.

“I now am aiming to compete in my first CTT championships for 10-mile, 25-mile and 50-mile in the future, and it’s looking good for that.

“I also wanted to acknowledge the support I have and I’m grateful to have friends and role models in the sport to push me forward.”

In the women’s event, Morley, also of Velotik Racing, clocked 25-09 to beat Congleton CC’s Lynsey Astle’s time of 26-13 and take a comfortable victory with Sally Cuncliffe (Velotik Racing) third in 26-16.

Elsewhere, Williams did finish first in the Veterans on Age Adjusted Standard, registering 20-26 to finish 31 seconds ahead of teammate Cunliffe in second and Graham Weigh Racing’s Alan Broadbent whose adjusted time sat at 21-18.

Steve Aston backed up the performances of Owen and Goodwin to help Fibrax Wrexham RC take the team prize in a total of 1:04-36, ahead of Graham Weigh Racing in second and Velotik Racing in third.

Aston was also the fastest in the road bike category in 23-19, ahead of Chester RC’s Mike Booker in 23-33 with 24-49 enough for Nigel Wood (CS Caergybi/Holyhead CC) to take third.

This event, run on the D10/25 course, starts on Barton Road just east of Farndon and heads west, turning at Llan-y-pwll down to Wrexham Industrial Estate and then following the course back to finish just west of the start line.
