Calum Brown (Wold Top The Edge Pactimo) snatched victory on a borrowed bike in the Matlock CC organised event on Bank Road, while Frances Owen (Wahoo Le Col) recorded her second win of the day in the women’s event and beat her own course record.
Brown, aged 32, recorded a winning time of one minute and 47.5 seconds on the 700-yard course which has a maximum gradient of 25%.
Bank Road starts outside the Town Hall in Matlock before starting off at a shallower gradient before getting gradually steeper as the course continues onto Rutland Street before finishing shortly before the junction with Wellington Street.
Brown took his third open hill climb victory of the season finishing just a second quicker than Andy Nichols (Team Lifting Gear Products).
Nichols is targeting victory at next weekend’s National Hill Climb Championship and won the morning event on Riber.
Josh Coyne (Bpm Coaching) completed the men’s podium stopping the clock in a time of 1-55.
“I only went to Bank to hang out and catch up with friends,” said Brown. “I got a lift with a friend who was driving from Sheffield but only had room for his bike. I signed on for the event and then went looking for a bike to borrow.
“My good mate Charlie Openshaw was kind enough to agree to lend me his bike. So, after he was done and rolled back down the hill I managed to jump on a turbo for eight minutes and get to the start line.
“I was extremely surprised I won.”
The quickest juvenile rider was Alfie Nott (Sheffield Youth Cycling Club) who stopped the clock in 2-24, while Charlie Openshaw (Team Lifting Gear Products) was fastest veteran in 2-12.
In the women’s event Frances Owen (Wahoo Le Col) added another victory to her collection stopping the clock in a time of 2-21.
The 31-year-old also won the morning’s event on Riber and completed back-to-back victories in Matlock.
Meanwhile, Frances Owen said: “I really look forward to Bank as it brings an awesome crowd - this year did not disappoint!
“I went out too hard (doesn’t everyone?!) and suffered after the main crowd zone, but when I realised I was on to break my own course record it pushed me over the line!”
Becky Hair (Laka x Pedal Mafia Race Team) finished second in the women’s category in 2-46 after also finishing runner-up on Riber, while para-cyclist Morgan Newberry (Loughborough Lightning /TRG) completed the women’s podium positions (3-13).
Quickest woman veteran was Alice Larkin (Glossop Kinder Velo Cycling Club) who stopped the clock in 3-17.
“I really look forward to Bank as it brings an awesome crowd - this year did not disappoint,” said Owen.
“I went out too hard and suffered after the main crowd zone, but when I realised I was on to break my own course record it pushed me over the line!”
