Frances Owen (Wahoo-Le Col) and Andy Nichols (Team Lifting Gear Products) were fastest female and male riders in Matlock CC’s Riber climb in Derbyshire on Sunday morning, completing their preparations for next weekend’s National Championships.
Owen would go on to win the afternoon’s other Matlock climb of Bank Road, while Nichols had to settle for second there.
Owen’s time of 4-44.0 made her fastest female by around 22 seconds from Becky Hair (Laka x Pedal Mafia RT) with third being Alice Larkin (Glossop Kinder Velo) in 5-38.0.
Meanwhile Nichols’ time of 3-33.7 gave him the win by 20.2 seconds over former national champion Adam Kenway (Brother UK) with third being Matthew Dennis (Univ of Nottingham CC) just 0.4 seconds further back.
“I was fairly happy with my ride,” said Nichols. “Riber is always a tricky one to pace and is pretty technical with a poor road surface and tight corners but managed to ride the right lines and didn't have too many issues with wheelspin.
“Adam [Kenway] got held up by a car so think it would have been really close between us.
“Looking ahead to the nationals, The Struggle is an awesome climb. It's a bit long for me but really looking forward to riding it.
“I don't think I'll be troubling the top riders but we've got a bit of competition this year for the team prize so definitely got something to ride for.”
And fastest female, Frances Owen said: “Riber is one of the toughest on the hill climb calendar with its greasy hairpins, steep gradients and traffic. I went for grip over weight and ran gravel tyres which I was glad about, but my time was quite down on my previous effort!”
