Toby Bush

Toby Bush celebrated the end of his GCSEs with his first win of the season in his first race of the season in the men’s event at the Spalding Cycling Club 10-mile time trial in Lincolnshire on Sunday morning, with Evgeniya Righini-Brand taking success in the women’s event.

Riding for Team Bottrill, Bush snatched victory by three seconds in 20-52 from Samuel Woodfield (Rule 28 x ATP Performance) who took the runners-up spot in 20-55, while a time of 21-00 saw Team PB performance’s Cian Leveridge round out an incredibly tight top three.

Bush’s last win came at the National Youth Championship (Yorkshire DC) 10-mile time trial on April 23 last year, while his next best performance had been a fourth place at the National Youth Championship Final (North Midlands DC) on September 11.

On his win, Bush said: “I’m happy with my performance today, I was feeling confident going into the race due to just having a big week of training after finishing my GCSEs.

Evgeniya Righini-Brand

“My coach (Dean Downing) and I have planned a couple of hard weeks to help me get back to a solid level of fitness after reducing my training over the past 8 weeks to concentrate on exams.

“I’m looking forward to racing the national TT championship next weekend. I’m hoping for a good result but as a first year junior this will be difficult.”

In racing his first event of the season, Bush outperformed the pre-race Spindata prediction, which had him in third place in a time of 22-01 over the course.

Righini-Brand, riding for Sleaford Wheelers Cycling Club, finished in 25-20 for victory, while Loughborough Lightning / TRG, clocked 25-31 for second and Gretchen Zoeller, for VTTA Yorkshire, was just two seconds back in 25-33.

This 10-mile event, run on the C10/30 course, starts five miles south of Spalding with riders heading north via Barrier Bank to the roundabout on the A1175, turning at the roundabout to return south bound and finishing 50 metres south of the start.
