James Holloway defied pre-race Spindata predictions to take his second victory of the season in the Wigan Wheelers’ 30-mile time trial in Cumbria on Sunday morning, while Susan Semple won the women’s event.

Ribble Collective rider Holloway stopped the clock in one hour, three minutes and four seconds to finish at the head of the field.

Promoting club rider Adam Taylor finished runner-up in 1:04-34, eight seconds clear of road bike rider Mark Lovett (Congleton CC – MyWindsock) who set 1:04-42 in securing third place.

Holloway has found consistent form of late, having finished first at the Chorley Cycling Club 10-mile time trial last month and then following it up with second place at the Lancashire Road Club 25-mile time trial on July 30, meaning he has two wins from 11 events so far in 2023.

In the women’s event, Semple, riding for Legato Racing Team, finished clear of the field in 1-17-28 which was over two minutes clear of her nearest opponent.

Meanwhile a time of 1:19-45 ensured Rachael Maxwell (Border City Wheelers) was runner-up and third place went to Sue Cheetham of North Lancashire Road Club in 1:19-52.

Fastest road bike went to Lovett, with the Concgleton CC rider finishing in 1:04-42 to win the category and take a fine third place overall.

The field of 34 riders faced tricky conditions with occasional heavy downpours but were aided by a drop in wind speeds.

The event, run on the L308 course, started just west of Sedgwick and riders headed north to the roundabout before turning and heading southwest on the A590 past Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve until reaching Lindale and turning back to Sedgwick - completing four laps before finishing just north of the start line.
