Abi Smith (Moonglu CC) and Maxwell Hereward (360 cycling) were fastest female and male riders respectively at the Harry Clarkson Memorial 10-mile event staged on Saturday evening by Pendle Forest CC.
Smith clocked 21-28 to win the women’s category by 36 seconds from Keri Parton (Team Boompods), while third quickest of the women was Anna Weaver (Team Kirkley Cycles) with 22-53.
And 17-year-old Maxwell Hereward covered the L1015 course near Levens in 19-25 to win overall by 31 seconds from David James Williams (Velotik RT), with third being Chris Little (Studio Velo) who was just three seconds further off the pace.
This was Hereward’s fifth open time trial win of the season so far, having also been victorious at the Blackburn and District CTC’s Circuit of Bashall Eaves last month as well as two rounds of the Manchester and District TTA 10-mile series in March and alongside Albie Jones (North Cheshire Clarion) at the Blackburn and District CTC two-up 10 in May.
Abi Smith has only ridden two open time trials so far, and she has been fastest female at both of them. Her previous ride was at the Sowerby Sunday Club 10 in June, where she was 18th overall and fastest female by a long margin.
Smith, whose personal best over 10 miles was set two years ago on this same course, is next in action at the Cleveland Coureurs 25 next Sunday.
“For the first half of the field the weather was very stormy, in particular the wind, which made the out-leg really slow - it was very hard!” said Smith.
“I did my best to make up speed on the way back, so all things considered I am fairly pleased with my ride considering the weather conditions.”
This event uses the L1015 course which begins near Levens and heads down the A590, using a downhill start to gain speed before heading south west to the turn just before Lindale. On heading back towards Levens, the finish is handily just before the uphill section.
