Chris Booth and Rachael Maxwell were fastest male and female at the hilly 27-mile time trial staged by Border City Wheelers on the Caldbeck circuit on Sunday.
Booth, the 34-year-old who rides for Giant-Kendal-Sidas.uk, was riding a road bike but still clocked 1-06-28 to win by 22 seconds from Pendle Forest CC veteran Richard Bideau, while third was Craig Horseman, another Giant-Kendal-Sidas.uk rider who was just over a minute behind his team-mate.
And fastest woman was Border City Wheelers’ Rachael Maxwell, the only female in the field and riding a road bike.
It was a warm and dry day with only very light minds as they tackled the L283 which begins just south of Dalston and heads down through Welton before turning west to Westward and then back east through Caldbeck and Hesket Newmarket, looping back up to the B5299 to Dalston.
Another Giant-Kendal-Sidas.uk rider, Ted Birkbeck was fastest junior in 1-12-48 on his road bike.
Fastest veteran on age adjusted times was Bideau with 1-03-56, with Horseman second and Bryan Pool (Border City Wheelers) third.
This win was Booth’s second of the season so far, with him having been fastest on a road bike at the Tour of the Meldons, round four of the Merlin Cycles Classic Series in Scotland last weekend.
He is next expected to be in action at the National Team Time Trial Championships on a 23-mile course in Warwickshire, alongside Horseman and Richard Nesfield.
Maxwell is next due in action at Wigan Wheelers’ 25-miler next Sunday, while she has also entered the VTTA North Lancs and Lakes 50-mile event next month.
