Thomas Brazier (HUUB WattShop) was the only rider to beat the 19-minute mark as he stormed to victory in the West Pennine RC 10, while Rachel Brown (Brother UK - Team OnForm) won the women’s event by 13 seconds.

Brazier, aged 39, posted a personal best time over the 10-mile distance of 18 minutes and 47 seconds – some 27 seconds clear of his nearest rival.

The L1015 is known for providing an opportunity for fast times starting near Levens in Cumbria and heading out and back along the A590 to Lindale.

Brazier was an early starter despite finishing second overall and first road bike in the Kent Valley RC hilly event earlier this month – taking his first open time trial victory since July 2019 this time out.

A close battle for second saw Oliver Bridgewood (Bath Cycling Club) post a time of 19-14 which was a single second quicker than quickest junior Maxwell Hereward (360cycling) in 19-15.

Fellow under-18 rider Sebastian Grindley (North Cheshire Clarion) missed out on the podium positions by just six seconds stopping the clock in 19-21 for a joint fourth position, equal with quickest veteran on scratch Marc Anderson (GTR - Return to Life P/B Streamline).

“It’s my best 10-mile time so I’m happy with that,” said Brazier. “It’s the first time that I’ve gone under 19 minutes so that’s ticked off my list.

“I thought it was a good place to go as on a good day it’s quite a fast course. I’ve done that course a handful of times but that was my best result.

“It’s a funny course as if you don’t get the right conditions it can be a slog, but it was favourable conditions on Saturday. There was a decent temperature and a headwind on the way out, on the way back I just got as aero as I could to be quick.

“I’ve joined HUUB WattShop this year as it’s a good standard and has given me motivation to do a bit of time trialling. I’ve got the National Team Time Trial Championship next weekend. I’m going to ride more time trials and as many national events as I can.”

The women’s event was also a closely fought event with the top three riders separated by just 16 seconds.

Brown, aged 37 went the quickest stopping the clock in 21-32 taking victory in her first open time trial event of the year.

Anna Weaver (Team Kirkley Cycles) had to settle for second place 13 seconds back (21-45) while quickest veteran woman on scratch Deborah Moss (Springfield Financial Racing Team) placed third (21-48).

The only road bike competitors were Dan Pons (Velo Club Cumbria) in the men’s event (21-50) and Hope Dixon (Lancashire RC) in the women’s field (25-58).
