Naomi de Pennington (Drag2zero) and Paul Westwood (Brereton Wheelers) proved fastest at the Rugby Racing CC 10-mile event in Warwickshire on Sunday morning.
Westwood recorded a personal best over the distance and took his second win in as many weeks on the same K11/10t course near Thurlaston having won the Leamington C&AC event last weekend.
But this time he was 43 seconds quicker, taking the win by 18 seconds from Mark Smith (Crawley Wheelers) with Nicolas Bastien (Rugby Racing CC) another seven seconds back in third place.
Banbury-based Naomi de Pennington justified her pre-race seeding as favourite for the women’s prize with a time of 21-51, but she was only five seconds faster than Lauren Creamer (Velo Fixers), with third being Victoria Nealon (Rugby Racing CC) who was another minute off the pace.
De Pennington has been in great form this season, and earlier this month placed third at the National 100-Mile Championships.
“I was very happy to come away with the win by a narrow margin against some super strong women. And the cake at the end was exceptional!” said de Pennington.
“It was an opportunity to try out my new UCI set up in windy conditions ahead of the Gran Fondo World Championships in Dundee in a week’s time.
“It was windy - a bit of a blustery cross headwind on the way out but a welcome tailwind up the incline on the return leg. There were dry roads which was a relief after an early downpour. Overall pretty decent I would say.”
The event used the K11/10t course, which mostly uses the A45 between Thurlaston and Ryton-on-Dunsmore to the west of Rugby.
