Cardiff Ajax CC rider Graeme Boswell ended a 32-year wait for victory in an open time trial when he scraped a one-second win at the Worcester St John’s CC 15-mile event in Worcestershire on Saturday afternoon.

The 48-year-old hasn’t tasted victory in an open event since he was 16, and he did it by the narrowest of margins.

His time of 33-31 for the 15-mile course near Welland gave him victory by just one second from 22-year-old Cian Leveridge (Team PB Performance), while third fastest overall was 64-year-old Joseph Costello (Legato Race Team) with 34-49.

With Leveridge taking the prize for the second overall, the prize for first senior went to Peter Lindfield (Velotik Racing Team) who clocked 35-06 and was fourth fastest overall.

And similarly, with Costello going home with the prize for third overall, under the ‘one rider one prize’ rule the prize for best over-60 rider went to Simon Dighton (Beacon Roads CC) who was fifth overall with 35-16.

Elsewhere in the result the prize for fastest over-50 rider went to Ian Taylor (Beacon Roads CC) with 37-42, while 13-year-old James Saunders (Wyre Forest CRC) was fastest junior and also fastest on a road bike with 39-39. James went home with the junior prize, leaving Daniel Gee (Sherwood CC) to take the road bike prize with a time of 37-04.

Finally, Malcolm Moore (Team Enable-MI Racing) was top over-70 rider, clocking 40-44.

The event used the K47/15 circuit which begins near Welland and heads south through Castlemorton and Birtsmorton, then over the M50 to Forthampton before turning back north to the edges of Upton-upon-Severn and finishing to the east of Welland.

Boswell’s other results so far this season has hinted at his good form, and while he has just missed out on the podium he placed fourth at the VC Bristol 10 and was fifth at the Virtual CC 25 earlier this month.

No women rode the event, with wet conditions causing several non-starters.
