David Mead (Team Lutterworth Centre) and Lauren Creamer (Velo Fixers) battled to the men’s and women’s victories respectively in the Legato Racing Team 10.

Veteran rider Mead set a new course record of 20 minutes and 12 seconds on the undulating course to take his third open time trial victory of the season.

The K15/10 saw competitors start on the outskirts of Tamworth before heading out and back along the B5493 to the turn at Appleby Magna Interchange.

Competitors were greeted by favourably light south-south westerly wind conditions, with the field including over 22 road bikes and a significant number of first-time racers.

Mead, aged 47, from Nuneaton, set a new course record for the slightly amended and truly testing course, last raced in 2006.

The victory followed wins for the veteran in both the Northampton & District CA 10 and Stratford CC 10 events earlier this season.

Paul Westwood (Brereton Whs) led the challenge behind finishing second in 21-07, while Simon Law (Team Enable - M.I. Racing – McCann) placed third (21-56).

“It was quite a challenging course which was very lumpy,” said Mead. “It was a new course for me so I was quite happy to take the win as I’ve not done so much racing this year as previously.

“That’s been down to not having as many local races so I’ve been a bit more selective with what I’ve been doing.

“I didn’t pre-ride the course so I didn’t anticipate what was coming up. I went for it from the start and then just dug in.”

Mead will next compete in the Leamington C&CA and Rugby Racing Cycling Club 10-mile events on the K11/10T course which he knows well having set a personal best of 19-04 on the same course.

The women’s event saw Creamer charge to a clear victory stopping the clock in a time of 23 minutes and 17 seconds.

The 31-year-old, from Birmingham, also won the sporting Finsbury Park CC 25 and was at home on the lumpy terrain with her time placing 14th overall.

Deb Hutson-Lumb (Wrekinsport CC) led the charge behind placing second in 24-14 and was also first overall veteran on age adjusted time.

Third woman was Diane Egerton-Warburton (Team Enable-MI Racing-McCann) in 24-37, securing the team prize alongside Law and Mark Wise (22-32).

In a hotly contested road bike competition James Veitch (Coalville Wheelers) took victory in an impressive time of 23-23 which placed him 11th overall.

Local rider Steve Godwin (Tamworth Cycling Club) chased him all the way finishing just 24 seconds back in 23-47, with regular road bike time competitor Nick Giles (Pocomotion Road Club) taking third (24-00).

The women’s road bike race saw a one-two-three for Tamworth Cycling Club, with Fay Casey winning in 29-02, ahead of Joy Hambridge in second (29-53) and Kirsty Matthews taking third (30-36).
