Tom Ward (WardPerformanceUK.com) broke the 20-minute barrier and set a new course record on his way to winning the Redditch Road & Path CC 10, while Denise Burrows (AeroCoach) won the women’s event.
Ward, aged 28, took his second open time trial victory of the season and set a new course benchmark time of 19 minutes and 43 seconds in hot conditions.
The K34/10F saw riders start at Flyford Flavell in Worcestershire before heading out and back along the A422 down to the roundabout connecting the A44 at Bredicot.
A decreased air pressure due to an incoming thunderstorm and a hot temperature resulted in fast conditions for the event.
A tailwind on the outward leg resulted in a tough return into a headwind which meant competitors had to time their effort.
Ward won the FTP Racing 25 last month and made it two wins from as many open time trials finishing 50 seconds clear of his nearest competitor.
Leading the charge behind was junior rider Jeremy MacLean (Solihull CC) whose time of 20-33 was seven seconds faster than Silas Vanden Branden (University Of Birmingham Cycling Club) (20-40).
The quickest veteran on scratch was Simon Garrett (Team Echelon) who finished seventh overall in 22-27.
Spindata had predicted a victory for Ward in 20-16 but the 28-year-old improved on that mark by 33 seconds.
“It is on home roads for me, so I know the roads extremely well,” said Ward. “I was very motivated to set a course record time that would be hard to beat, as I don’t want someone else having the record on my patch.
“I went out much faster than expected, reaching the turn at 32 miles per hour average, but knew it would be harder coming back.
“I felt strong until around 15 minutes in, when I really felt the heat and effort. Those last few minutes were especially unpleasant.
“I wasn’t sure where the finish was before I raced and I came upon it sooner than expected, which to my delight meant a sub 20-minute ride, which I did not think possible prior to starting.”
In the women’s event veteran rider Burrows posted a winning time of 25-26 which was 33 seconds quicker than her nearest challenger.
Burrows also won the Melton Olympic CC 25 last month in 1-00-11 and showed her form over the shorter distance to add another win to her collection.
Fellow veteran Heidi Yates (Banbury Star Cyclists' Club) stopped the clock in 25-53 to finish second, while Debbie Bradley (Peddlamaniacs Cycle Club) was third (26-16).
The road bike category saw veteran rider Kevin Satterthwaite (Gorilla Coffee Cycling Club) take a comfortable victory in 24-25 which was almost six minutes quicker than his nearest opponent.
Mark Gunn (Stratford Cycling Club) finished second in the road bike category in 30-24, while juvenile Ronan Finlinson (Redditch Road & Path CC) was third (35-58).
The women’s road bike event was won by Joy Hambridge (Tamworth Cycling Club) who stopped the clock in 30-43, ahead of Lezley Moran (Redditch Road & Path CC) in second (33-19).
