Richard Oakes

Veteran rider Richard Oakes (Team Ohten Aveas) took victory by just nine seconds in the Coventry CC 10 – The Diane Cooke Memorial – on Sunday morning, while Sian Marsh (Team Boompods) won the women’s event.

Oakes, from Rutland, was the only rider to break the 20-minute marker stopping the clock in a time of 19 minutes and 57 seconds.

The K11/10T saw riders start at Thurlaston, near Rugby, in Warwickshire before heading out and back along the A45 to the turn at Ryton-on-Dunsmore.

Oakes, aged 54, finished second in last week’s VTTA East Mids 10 and went one better on this occasion to take his first open time trial victory of the season.

A close battle for the podium positions saw the top three riders separated by just 19 seconds with scratch rider Oakes coming out on top.

Fellow veteran David Mead (Team Lutterworth Cycle Centre) won the Stratford CC 10 earlier this month but had to settle for second this time out finishing nine seconds back in 20-06.

Completing the podium positions was Josh Newbould (DRAG2ZERO) who stopped the clock in a time of 20-16.

Spindata had predicted the top three riders correctly, but their times were slightly down on those forecasted.

The women’s race saw a two-rider battle between Marsh and Lauren Creamer (Velo Fixers) with just 15 seconds separating the competitors.

Marsh, from Shipston-on-Stour, posted the quickest time of 22-42 to take her second open time trial victory of the season.

The 30-year-old also won the Stratford CC 10 earlier this month when she again came out on top after a battle with Creamer.

On this occasion Creamer finished 15 seconds behind in 22-57. The third placed battle was even closer with quickest veteran on scratch Gemma Johnson (Beacon Roads CC) clocking 25-32 which was five seconds quicker than Fay Barrington (Banbury Star Cyclists' Club) in 25-37.
